Launch of the VIP Mentoring School-Based Program
Summary - Studies show that mentoring positively impacts a child. However, mentoring by itself does not produce the final results that is truly needed, especially in higher risk youth that live in communities where few, if any, resources are available. These youth need additional skills, training, and life experiences in order for them to shed the “at-risk” label and reach personal success. The VIP Mentoring School-Based Program will utilize the strengths of both school-based mentoring and community-based mentoring, combined with family resource support.
The VIP Mentoring School-Based Program is designed to provide families and children living within the community with a community resource and educational support mechanism to enhance the caregiver’s ability to make their children successful in life. The primary objective of the VIP Mentoring School-Based Program will be to work with an initial class of 4th grade students and successfully transition each of these student’s educational levels from elementary school to middle school. VIP will quantitatively measure this transition success through an evaluation plan for the project that will be developed through Wayne State University’s Center for Urban Studies.
