About Being A Mentor:

Q. What do I have to do to become a mentor?
A. Five easy steps: 1) Complete the two page on-line
application form. 2) Attend the VIP mentor training session of your
choice. 3) Complete a Mentor Pre-interview Questionnaire. 4) Complete a staff interview at
the VIP office. 5) Meet the child to whom you will be matched and their
parent.

Q. What is the time commitment a mentor makes?
A. Each mentor makes a commit to meet with their match for two hours once a week, over a twelve month period.

Q. I don't live in Wayne County; can I still become
a mentor?
A. Yes, many VIP mentors live in counties outside Wayne.

Q. Where do the children live?
A. Most of our matched children reside in Wayne County
|

Q. Can I select an area in Wayne County I want the
child to reside?
A. Yes, however, specifying a certain area could prolong your wait
to be matched.

Q. After I apply, how long does it take to be
matched with a child?
A. If all of the paperwork is completed and returned at the close of your orientation/training meeting and there are no restrictions relating to the child's residence, an individual could be matched in as little as four weeks. You can help move the process forward by contacting all of your references in advance and encouraging them to forward the information to VIP Office as soon as they receive the request for information.

Q. If I become a mentor is there an opportunity for employment with VIP?
A. VIP has a small stable staff, so this is unlikely; however,
many VIP staff have been or are mentors. |

Q. Is there a lot of paperwork and forms for me to
fill out?
A. Mentor initially completes a two page application, and once training is completed there is an additional Pre-interview Questionnaire to be completed.

A. Yes all perspective mentors will be screened and a local, state and national check will be conducted. |

About Orientation & Training:

Q. How often is mentor Orientation & Training offered?
A. Three or four times each month. For a listing of scheduled training [ list of dates and locations ]

Q. How long is mentor Orientation & Training?
A. Training lasts between 2 ½ and 3 hours.
|

Q. What is VIP mentor Orientation & Training?
A. Orientation & Training is conducted as two parts in one session. Part one, or orientation, gives the mentor an overview of the program, its goal and the mechanics of how it works. Part two of the session, or training, prepares the mentor to interact effectively with the mentee and parent/guardian. Both parts must be completed before becoming a mentor.

Q. Can I attend Orientation & Training
before I commit to becoming a mentor?
A. Yes, no commitment is necessary to attend. After training, each potential mentor is given the opportunity to move forward in the program, if it is appropriate for them. |

Q. Where does VIP get the children to be mentored?
A. Referrals are made from community agencies, juvenile court, school personnel, churches, police and parents/ guardians. Some youth are referred to VIP Mentoring not because they have broken a law, but because they are having difficulty adjusting to a major change in their lives.

Q. How old are the children?
A. VIP matches children 7 - 14 years of age.

Q. What is the gender of the children?
A. VIP matches both boys and girls?

Q. Where do the children live?
A. Most of the children reside in Wayne County. |

During the Match:

Q. What will the child and I do together?
A. Mentors arrange a time and pick up their child at the child's home. Activity are pre-planned by the mentor. VIP has many suggestions for activities and the Case Manager will assist you in choosing age appropriate activates.

Q. Does VIP offer activities to the mentor &
child?
A. Yes, however, most of the weekly activities are planned by the
mentor. VIP offered activities can be accessed in this site.

Q. Who pays for activities, gas, etc.?
A. VIP planned activities are usually paid for by corporate
donors, however, the normal weekly activities are paid for by the mentor.
Mileage to and from these activities are generally tax deductible. |

Q. What happens after the 12-month match is over?
A. The 12 month commitment will go by very quickly. At that time you and your match will be guided by your Case Manager in an evaluation and planning process. Many of our matches ask to continue in the program. The Case Manager can extend the match for an additional year. Others Mentors will complete the twelve month program and they will be guided by their Case Manager through a closure procedure. This process helps to insure a positive and successful experience for both the Mentor and Mentee. Your Case Manager will assist you every step of the way.
